BENU Takes Home Team Title

BENU Takes Home Team Title

Benedictine Mesa opened the California Pacific Conference Men's Golf Championship with the lowest first round score to establish a seven-stroke lead, and the Redhawks improved on that total in each of the next two rounds to claim their first Cal Pac Championship trophy and an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship that will take place in Dalton, Ga., May 21-24.  BENU beat out Embry-Riddle, which had won three straight Cal Pac titles and eight in the previous 10 years, which turned in the best team round of the tournament with today's 290.  Park-Gilbert was eight strokes behind the Eagles, followed by Providence Christian, Simpson, and Cal Maritime.

BENU's James Mackie edged teammate Sabastian Carranza for top individual honors, posting rounds of 71-70-73—214 while Carranza finished at 70-75-70—215.  Mackie and Carranza were the only two golfers to shoot a 70 over the par-72, 6794-yard Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura, Calif.  Combined, they recorded four of the seven under-par rounds in the field of 32 golfers.  Mackie completed the three rounds scoring even par on Par 3s, 1-over on Par 4s, and 3-under on Par 5s.

Park's Eli Cruzan (75-72-72—219), PCC's Sean Vann (74-71-75—220), and ERAU's Alex Kam (78-71-73—222) were the next three finishers, which earns them All-Cal Pac recognition.
