Cal Pac Selects Players of the Week for April 8

The following California Pacific Conference student-athletes have been recognized as the conference Players of the Week for their performances during the period of April 1-7:

 

BASEBALL

Player of the Week

Drew Barragan of Embry-Riddle hit .625 and drove in five runs in the two games last week. The senior shortstop from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., blasted a pair of home runs and hit two doubles, and the four extra base hits gave him 13 total bases.

Pitcher of the Week

Garrett Brogdon of Simpson picked up the win in his lone start last week, and it was a stellar outing.  The junior righthander from Cypress, Tex., threw 9.1 innings in two appearances, scattered five hits, two walks, and struck out 12, including a three-win win over Westcliff.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week

Diana Miranda Montano of Embry-Riddle was a hard out for the Golden Eagles this weekend as she collected seven hits (compiling a .538 average), including two doubles and a triple for 11 total bases.  The senior infielder from Tucson, Ariz., also drove home four runs to help the Eagles improve to 13-1 in Cal Pac play.

Pitcher of the Week

Abril Nerey of Park-Gilbert continued her stellar streak of outings.  The senior from Rio Rico, Ariz., appeared in five games last week, earning two wins and a save. In 24 innings she allowed only two earned runs, struck out 21, and finished the week with a 0.58 ERA.  She also hit .444 and drove in the tying run in an extra inning over Benedictine Mesa.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Attacker of the Week

Gabriel Pizza of Westcliff helped guide his squad to a postseason berth with another strong performance.  The sophomore outside hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, delivered 22 kills—a 4.40 kill per set average—while hitting .277.  He also contributed three service aces, 10 digs, and was in on two blocks.

Setter of the Week

David Raffaelli of Simpson had an outstanding week guiding the Red Hawk offense.  In three matches last week, the senior setter from Folsom, Calif., finished with 108 assists—9.82 per set—and added eight kills with only two errors.  Defensively, he added 13 digs and 12 block assists.

Defender of the Week

Jared Schnake led the UC Merced defense in the win over No. 14 Benedictine Mesa with nine digs, four blocks, and a service ace. Additionally, he had 19 receptions to just one reception error.  The sophomore from Riverside, Calif., added 12 kills in the win that proved to be key in the Bobcats winning the Cal Pac regular season title.
