Cal Pac Names Players of the Week for March 11

The following California Pacific Conference student-athletes have been recognized as the conference Players of the Week for their performances during the period of March 4-10:

 

BASEBALL

Player of the Week

After winning the NAIA Player of the Week last week, Embry-Riddle's Drew Barragan kept right on slugging.  The senior shortstop from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., continued his hot start with nine hits in 17 at bats (.529), including three doubles and a homer.  The NAIA leader in runs batted in added 12 more in four games last week.  In the field, he has made just one error this season, leads the team with 17 assists, and has started five double plays.

Pitcher of the Week

In his only start last week, Simpson's Garrett Brogdon hurled a complete-game four-hitter in a 14-1 win at Park-Gilbert.  The junior right-hander from Cypress, Tex., allowed just one earned run, walked two, and struck out 10 to record his first win of the season.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week

Autumn Sulusi of Embry-Riddle hit .533 over the weekend as the Eagles went 4-1 at the Tucson Invitational.   The sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawaii, had eight hits, including two doubles and one home run.  She finished the weekend with a .867 slugging percentage, seven RBI, and six runs.

Pitcher of the Week

In the two games she started at Tucson Invitational, Embry-Riddle's Vanessa Brink did not allow an earned run in 13 innings of work.  The junior from Vail, Ariz., struck out 25 and surrendered a total of just six hits in wins over Jamestown (ND) and William Penn (Iowa).

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Attacker of the Week

Gabriel Pizza of Westcliff was a key factor in the Warriors' offense that went 2-1 last week.  The sophomore outside hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, totaled 35 kills on a hitting percentage of .348.  He also added 11 digs, five total blocks, and four service aces.

Setter of the Week

For the second week in a row, Westcliff's Michael Schoffstall has been selected after posting a second week of outstanding numbers. The sophomore outside hitter, pressed into setting duties last week, guided the Warrior offense by dishing out 99 assists as well as contributing three kills, three aces, and a block.

Defender of the Week

Max Niederberger of UC Merced averaged 1.42 blocks per set and 1.57 kills per set in two Bobcat wins last week, helping his team move into a tie for first place in the Cal Pac. The sophomore middle blocker from San Diego, Calif., had six blocks and smacked seven kills on a .500 hitting percentage at Pacific Union before finishing with four blocks and four kills against Simpson.
