Chavez, Souza Heading for Showdown
With the California Pacific Conference Championship meet just two weeks away, an interesting showdown is brewing between UC Merced's Jonathan Chavez and Soka's Andre Souza. Chavez, a two-time Cal Pac medalist and reigning All-American, has recorded the two fastest 8k times this Fall, and three of the top 10. Twice he has clocked runs of 24:40—a time just seconds off ranking among the top 10 all time in conference history. But Souza is hot on Chavez's trail, having recorded the next three best times to date. Souza's best this season was a 24:46 at last week's The Master's XC Invitational, four seconds better than he ran last month. Soka's Jordan Bravo and UCM's Derrick Pickrel and Sharvin Manjrekar have also run strong times this season, giving all indication that the Cal Pac Championship will be a tight race.
The Cal Pac Championship race will be held on Monday, Oct. 28 at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif.
